Concession

I feel like a walking zombie this morning, but that is beside the point. Trump won, decisively. I don’t understand why people voted for him but he is our president-elect, and I intend to give him the benefit of the doubt. A chance. We all deserve that. If he can drain the swamp and clean up Washington and shrink big government, great. We can only hope at this point that he will do some good.

I offer my open mind because of the 8 years of vitriol I read during Obama’s terms. It seemed un-American to bash the president day-after-day. I wished people would give him a chance, and I vowed over that time to not be a sore loser should a candidate I did not like prevail.

Also in play: I have always embraced Jesus, Gandhi and MLK’s teachings around non-violence, even though I fear that violence is our future. American’s are pitted against each other and reactionary crazies are invigorated by Trump’s win.

That does not mean I will be complacent. I have been feeling a call to become more activist around the issues that matter to me: the environment, healthcare, and refugees. I also hope to promote healing wherever, whenever. I know many men and women who are devastated right now. Some of my own relationships need healing. We need to retreat to the wisdom of our great faith traditions and find solace, direction, and hope. If you are a praying person, I suggest praying for our leaders now and every day.

  1. I opened my emails this morning in the hope that something would comfort me. Thank you for your message—it helped. I am struggling with many things this morning, mostly I am trying to understand the underpinnings of the movement that put DT in power. If I can recover in time, my Sunday morning post will be on that topic. Take care, Jane.

  2. Good for you Jane. Many of us here in the UK feel the same way about Brexit but that’s the way the vote went so we need to crack on and try to make the best of it. Good Luck.
