Memo from Garden May 24

Dear Jane,

Remember the 60s television show, Car 54 Where Are You? Well, that is what we are singing out here, only our version goes like this, Your Garden Highness, Where Are You?

  In loneliness,

  Your Garden

  Hello Most Wonderful Garden,

I have not forgotten about you! Don’t  you forget I have been out there a few times. And I know that you know that the wind and rain are not conducive to gardening.  You love rain, but I do not. Furthermore, this weekend I have another wedding, a Baptism and a regular service to organize.

But, don’t worry, we will have a wonderful garden this year. And, it’s Memorial Day Weekend. Rather than camping or going to see Kerry in Denver, I am staying home just to GARDEN. By the end of the holiday weekend you will be planted and loving it!

Previously I listed for you my seed selections for this year’s garden. However, as you well know, garden, this is the time of year when I succumb to the charms of the seed racks, so the list has grown.

You will soon see that one big difference now, is that I don’t experiment much anymore; rather, I buy seeds that have done well in this area. Experimenting is fine, but it gets old spending huge amounts of money on interesting seeds that don’t grow well here.

I usually buy mostly open pollinated seed and avoid the big seed companies, but a few of those made their way into the stack. Here are the additional seeds I bought just for you:

  • Tomato, Red Cherry Large, San Marzano (will plant directly in the soil)
  • Okra, Clemson Spineless
  • Kale, Vates Dwarf Blue
  • Turnip, Shogoin
  • Kholrabi, White Vienna
  • Dill
  • Marigold, Lemon Gem
  • Four O’Clock, Marvel of Peru
  • Gaillardia, Godlen Goblin
  • Bells of Ireland
  • Sunflower, Dwarf Sungold

Complete List for This Year

Your optimistic horticulturist
