Ruminating

I over think everything. Sometimes I over think (obsess) on a matter for a few days, then let it go. Then, those times when I take months to over think a topic before I act! Years! No worry: rumination is balanced in my brain by impulsiveness.  I don’t like either habit but seem powerless to change.

aaRecent studies suggest that some of our habits are hardwired in our brains–like collecting things.  Brain structure and our personal information superhighway may also contribute to thinking patterns, including falling in love, falling out of love, compassion, kindness, and religious thinking. Some people may be hardwired for unhappiness. Male and female brains differ dramatically. It’s a fascinating thought, that like eye color or body height, thinking patterns are genetic.

Cognitive science and cognitive psychology look at the brain and thinking patterns. Scientists have shown that with cognitive therapy, some thinking patterns can change. Others may never change, including the desire patterns in pedophile brains.

The new frontier: the brain. I added a few psychology sites to my news feed so I can keep up. Once I learn more about what is hardwired-or-not, I can stop beating myself up for ruminating and other thinking patterns. Nice to know we are hard-wired and not necessarily flawed human beings.

Afterthought: does ruminating all the time make me a ruminant animal  : )

  1. Great post! I too ruminate over “making plans” but then may impulsively “jump into” a commitment! I never beat myself up about it ~ sometimes just have to regroup and begin my “making plans vs impulsiveness” again. So consequently, I end up wondering….wondering….wondering sometimes.
I read “Tales of a Female Nomad” when in Mongolia and then downloaded her second book. Since I don’t cook the recipes bored me in book #2 and detracted from its content. I am now perusing the downloads for additional “women journey alone” reading material.
I joined Servas within this past year but have not been in locations where the hosts are…..yet.

    • I am finding a great deal of books about women journeys. I especially love to listen to them in bed (Audible). I am trying to pare my budget down, but keep money for books and Audible versions. Let me know if you find some good reads! I have been listing mine in my Reading Logs for the last few years.
