Don the Baptist and the Mosquitos are Coming

Pave the way! DtB, my adventure buddy, is coming for a visit. He leaves ND on Memorial Day and arrives here a few days later. We plan to scurry up to Priest Lake with the new camper and explore the terrain. Since our adventures usually end up with a dramatic twist, I can’t help but wonder what will happen this time. Moose in the campsite? A grizzly? What a cool thing if we could have a nice, peaceful time. We will hike the shoreline trail and one or two others. Hopefully, the water will be warm enough for kayaking.

I have only been to Priest Lake one time, but it became a favorite destination. The terrain is mountainous and the lake huge. I may have mentioned that it feels like I am in Alaska (what I imagine Alaska to be like). The area is also home to the last herd of Woodland Caribou, but they usually hang out just north of the Canadian border, according to what I read.

I made the first trip in chilly weather. A warm-up  is coming and could lead to mosquito hatching. I am eager to see DtB but not the mosquitos. I am a mosquito magnet, and I scratch and pick at the scabs, leaving scars. Mosquitos are not welcome to the upcoming party. So, I shudder a bit at what I might encounter. I don’t have to worry, though, about forgetting the bug spray. Everything is always in the camper now! However, if you have  a miracle way to keep mosquitos at bay, please let me know.

  1. You might not want to use this method—it’s messy and smelly: When I was growing up in Northern Canada, we used to make “smudge pots” and wave them around where ever we went. It was effective, but quite uncomfortable if the smoke got in your eyes. Yes, smoke. The pots were small fires with grass placed on the top to muffle the smoke and prevent the fire from breaking out. Sounds incredible that we, as young children were allowed to carry them, but there you have it. It was smudge or be eaten alive!

    • I get the smudge thing! You were in Canada? I have heard the skeeters are huge there, which is partially why I am anxious (I am about 40 miles from border).

  2. A post and comments from a few awhile back said to get a Thermacell..little handy gadget they put on a table by them or carry. Said it WORKS!! I can’t figure out where the bugs are here on the Savanah River, Strom Lake. I swore we’d be carried away..nothing but wasps and big bees who only stay a bit. WEIRD!! Gonna look up Priest Lake!! “DtB”…cute!!
