Survival Kit

a

Staying positive is a real challenge. Today it will be easier. I had a good night’s sleep and now, strong coffee. One day at a time. Let things unfold. Do not let the events “hook me” (more on that in Sunday Reflection)

Years ago, I created a survival kit for use when camping in remote places. I have not used anything in my “bug out” bag, but I am happy to have it. Could save my life one day. I realize now that I need another kind of survival kit, something to get me through this time of uncertainty. Something to help me cope and survive with a positive attitude. My new kit contains the following:

  • Stop listening to the news. They are one of the villains in this drama. We are their puppets.  Period. Instead, I will read my news feeds (Feedly, Flipboard) in the morning with select, quality, impartial sources.
  • Don’t overthink things. This is the human drama that has played out in human history, over and over. Do not despair for the same reason.
  • Stay away from most churches. They are also one of the villains in the drama. Read Dietrich Bonhoeffer for inspiration.
  • Reread Gandhi, the teachings of Jesus and other great heroes of history
  • Do good things for others, with every ounce of my being. Often. With commitment. As a way of life. Remember daily: one person can make a difference in the lives of others.
  • Stay outdoors. Woods, beaches, prairies, plains, rivers, lakes, mountains.

Onward today. I finish up student teaching this morning (ESL) and work in the Florida forest this afternoon. Tomorrow, find resources that distribute quilts to kids. May as well do something good with all this time for sewing.
