Time to Plant Fall/Winter Garden

I have several goals for my fall/winter garden, as follows:

1.To harvest cool season crops into October; I plant these in the main garden: carrots, beets, kale, kohlrabi, pac choi, cabbage, radish. I use both seeds and seedlings that i started in the Aerogrow.

2. Plant seeds that will germinate very early next spring and produce early harvests; I put these in hay bale planters and the main garden, including lettuce, spinach, kale, and then cover with glass windows. Out in the main garden, i will also plant garlic, carrots and broad beans, which will go dormant and mature early.

3. Overwinter certain crops: cabbage, parsnips (which are growing now), kale and spinach. I will protect these with row covers and/or hay and let them sit cozy and comfy all winter.

All the varieties that I am planting are cool season, and they can withstand a frost. Some of the varieties (kale, parsnips, carrots) improve after a frost.

However, I will have more photos of the summer garden and lots of stories about harvesting, pickling, and freezing.
