Late August

I am picking lots of eggplant, cucumbers, squash, beans, onions, kales, and carrots. From these  I put up another 2 dozen jars of pickles, dilly beans, squash pickles and mixed vegetables. I froze more of the carrots/beans,  and am drying onions outside for winter storage.

I got a few jalapenos and green chilies too! I dug up a few potatoes. The yields are disappointing so far so I will let them linger a bit into September. Tomato yields are low too, but that is nothing new for me.

I may dig up a few of my mature parsnips but I will leave most to overwinter.

The last items that will come in from the summer garden are winter squash, ground cherries and tomatillos. The plants look great. I see a few blue hubbard, spaghetti, and and orange version of winter squash.

As for ground cherries and tomatillos, both mature late, usually just before frost. These plants are related and require a long growing season.

So, in the end, I got a lot of variety, just very low yields.

The  fall/winter varieties are  up now and look promising. Redbor Kale grows like a weed. I don’t really like it raw but will try it cooked in a soup. I see lots of carrots, greens, and lettuce seedlings too!

I am happy that the summer garden is nearly finished. However, I will have lots to do in the fall, including putting fresh layers of leaves, grass and compost on my beds. More on that as it happens.

I ordered the wrong USB cable for my camera…the right one is coming and I will have lots of photos of pickles!
