Aging in a Small Town

I ate my first noon dinner at the senior center yesterday. Yummm–roast pork and all the sides. I got an apple to take home for later. I enjoyed the company of the other 5 people at my table immensely. I also enjoyed slowing down midday.  I have work appointments today and tomorrow at noon so I am sad to miss the next two meals.

And while I am talking aging issues–what an interesting adventure to get a shingles shot. I know that it costs $150 or so at a pharmacy, which is where my doctor told me to go.  I decided to check out public health (free). Since I have insurance, they asked me to check in with them first–makes sense. They said, yes, we cover the shot at 100%. Woo hoo.

However, my small town doc doesn’t’ carry it, which is why they told me to go to a drug store in the first place. And yes, my insurance would cover that but I pay upfront and get reimbursed. Then, the insurance rep said, if I live near a Walgreen’s “clinic” (something new to me, in a Walgreen’s store), they could give me the shot and submit the claim for me.

Sounds great. Next step: find a Walgreen’s Clinic. None in Wyoming, of course. I did find one in Denver–3 hours south. Actually, Denver is a great option. I am planning a trip there Sunday or Monday to see my son and retrieve my car, which I loaned him several months ago while he fixed his Durango.

That trip will be a mini-adventure. I am taking the Greyhound, then the Light Rail to his place. He lives on the far west side of Denver, closer to Golden, CO. The bus station is in the middle of downtown Denver and it arrives during the rush hour. The light rail is a few blocks from the bus station and only costs $2.50.

On the way back home the next day, I will stop at a Walgreen’s clinic not far from his place. Kind of an interesting way to get a shingles shot. While I am at it, I will also get my flu shot.

I am a bit obsessive about getting the shot because I had a fierce case of chicken pox when I was little. My dad had a fierce case of shingles. So, as the commercial said, the virus is already in me.

So, I have a number of 60-year-old friends who read my blog–I challenge each of you to get your shingles shot by Tuesday, Sept 9, when I get mine. You know how to do it now–no excuses.
