Whose Faith?

Have I written here about my disdain for evangelical Christians?  My disgust rose to a higher level after the Presidential election. Evangelicals liked Trumps’ racist, sexist, and homophobic values so they decided that he must be a Christian. They came out in support of him, knowing he would repay them with conservative judges on the Supreme Court, among other things. Evangelicals made a “deal with the devil” as they cast aside, once again, true Christian values and helped to elect the most immature, self-serving President ever. Even as everyone else is waking up, evangelicals still show strong support for Trump. One evangelical leader stated that the wall was okay because heaven will have a wall.

And then, this week we learn that Mike Pence’s wife teaches at a school that bans everyone but heterosexual Christians. I am sure people of color are not welcomed either. Sure, he has religious freedom. But, I expect (or did), broader thinking and a more expansive world view from my leaders. That is the thing about leaders: they are supposed to set an example.

So why does this rankle my spirit today? As I read the news this morning, I see images of MLK all over the Internet. I see quotes attributed to him. I am reminded of the Christian faith that motivated me, the one that I believe actually reflects the teachings of Jesus. Yes, it is a real thing, a belief system based on real teachings.

Love your neighbor as yourself.

Do unto others.

Love is the greatest of all things

Please, even if you support Trump, don’t confuse Pence and the evangelicals with true Christian values. And don’t think for a minute that Trump has any Christian values. That is easy to see when you look at his behavior and compare his words with Jesus’.  MLK exemplified Christianity.

What can I say about our reality: that a real Christian was murdered for his beliefs while a fake one rose to the presidency and gets to destroy everything?
