When in Wishek…

I am starting to feel like a local. For one thing, I made a dessert for the annual Fireman’s Fundraising Dinner. I don’t bake often, but I loved it. I used a recipe that the local “Germans from Russia” make (Two-Tone dessert, made with pudding, cream cheese, and Cool Whip on a flour/nut crust and topped with toasted coconut.

My yummy dessert:  the locals favorite

Dinner was incredible: BBQ beef, beans, etc. Always pickles in our German community.

So, if home-made dessert is not enough to get me in with the locals, I fished at a favorite hangout. We went out before dark, and caught two “Northerns” Most people do not like these fish because they are aggressive and not that tasty (not when you have Walleye and Perch). However, locals can the Northerns and it is supposed to taste like tuna. Someday when I get a pressure canner I will try it. Some people pickle the fish, but I don’t find that appealing.

My friend has a boat that works just perfect for two, complete with trolling motor:

Make that, THREE. Tango went, all secure in his life vest:

Another locals activity: dinner and dominoes with the older ladies. Again, we ate community favorite foods: tater tot casserole, pigs in a blanket (beef/rice wrapped in cabbage leaves) and mandarin orange/sherbet jello. I beat all four of the ladies, probably not polite for my first time playing dominoes here. Don’t want to get a reputation.

All is well in Wishek, North Dakota! Coming soon: a camping trip and early gardening!
